Pet Safe Gardening
Gardens can add such beauty and joy to our lives. Today we want to share some tips on how to create a garden with pet safety in mind. * Please keep in mind this is NOT a complete list of potential hazards. * Hopefully it will get you thinking about what may or may not work for your yard and your pet, then you can do further research to create what you want!
PLANT SELECTION
Plants are the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a garden. But did you know that many plants are toxic to animals if ingested? This includes some common garden plants like Amaryllis, Azalea, Daffodil, Daisy, Foxglove, Hyacinth, Hydrangea, Iris, Lillies (Tiger, Day, etc), Morning Glory, Rhododendron, Sago Palm and Tulips .. to name a few.
If you would like to have a potentially toxic plant in your garden, consider planting it in an area your pet does not have access too. Or you could use fencing or raised beds as tools to limit access.
For areas your pet can access, consider choosing non-toxic plants like African Violets, Ferns, Forsythias, Fuchsias, Lilacs, Magnolias, Petunias, Roses, Snapdragons or Sunflowers.
For a more complete list of >1000 toxic and non-toxic plants, we recommend you visit the ASPCA’s website at:

CHEMICAL SAFETY
Many chemicals can be harmful for pets (and people!). Opt for natural pest control methods and pet friendly fertilizers.
Store all chemicals out of your pet’s reach and limit their access to treated areas.
HAZARD MITIGATION
Choose ground cover with your pet in mind. Small rocks can be swallowed. Mulch can cause splinters or be chewed on. Use extreme caution with any type of treated ground cover.
Avoid sharp-edged decorations or fencing. Put sharp tools away in a safe location.
Cover or fence off pools or ponds that could be a drowning hazard.
Pick up fallen fruit that may pose a risk if ingested.
Check the yard for mushrooms especially in shady areas in damp conditions.
CREATE PET FRIENDLY FEATURES
You could create a designated place for you pet to play: a digging box or a bed of catnip or catgrass.
Ensure your yard has shady areas for your pet to cool down and make sure they always have access to water when outdoors.
Hopefully these tips get you thinking about how you can create a garden that is beautiful and safe for you pets!
